the South, and so on. The beginning of the first chapter entitled "Politics and politicians" is extraordinary. It was 1901. I read: "One of the primi fatti che fermano l’osservatore della vita italiana รจ la confusione e la decadenza dei vecchi partiti politici. Essi hanno perso fede nei loro principi, nel loro paese, in se stessi. L’azione loro sembra poco meglio di una interessata lotta per raggiungere cariche pubbliche e di una cieca resistenza a forze che non sanno comprendere, assimilare, e pertanto temono”.
